Solar (Energy) In A Box!

Solar panel on home

While cruising the trade floor at SOLAR 2008, I kept my eye out for simple turnkey solar systems. Let's be honest, buying a solar electric setup can be a daunting technical challenge for the average homeowner, so any company that tries to simplify the process gets points from me.

Solar in a Box caught my eye.

Ready Solar announced their Solar in a Box system on April 9, 2008 and premiered it at the expo. The idea is pretty simple: Ready Solar assembles many of the components in the factory, so the traditional on-site (and expensive) work is reduced. The company claims the average installation job can be completed in roughly half the time.

The Solar in a Box package consists of:

  • Panels grouped in pre-mounted and grounded modules with mounting frame
  • An inverter with integrated AC & DC disconnects.
  • Weather-proof combiner box and connector cables.
  • Paperwork and warranty

A word about the paperwork – the company claims their standardized permit package reduces document creation by 85%. I’m wondering if they’ve managed to simplify the notoriously difficult California rebate process. I suspect not, but I'll update the blog with further info. Also wondering if the rebate application is handled by the homeowner and/or Solar Ready or its installers.

From what I could tell, the package had a benefit beyond simplicity in installation – it’s a more aesthically-pleasing package sitting on your roof. Yes, we Californians are still ALL about appearance!

Congratulations to Ready Solar for thinking "Inside the Box". Now they need to provide more details on their (information-skimpy) website.
